New research finds that married couples who fight fair have a better shot at long-term success. 'Today' correspondent Amy Robach examines the "Speaker/Listener Technique" which experts believe can "lengthen and strengthen your marriage." As a case study, 'Today' interviews Jackie and Dave Gable, two strong believers in the Speaker/Listener Technique and a couple since the 7th grade. "We start to acknowledge that we're seeing a danger sign and rather than let it get bigger and bigger and bigger, I'll grab it right then," Jackie explains.
"Whoever's got the floor is the one speaking and if you don't have the floor, you're the listener," explains Scott Stanley, author of "Fighting for Your Marriage." Stanley's research has found that couples who handle conflict poorly are set up for failure. "It's not rocket science," explains Stanley, "It's just showing the speaker that you actually are really tuned to them right now."
