Do horses like beer? 'Morning Express' host Robin Meade explores a somewhat unusual feeding technique that takes the Toby Keith lyric "beer for my horses" quite literally. "Feeding beer to race horses may help them go faster, well at least one trainer thinks so," Meade explains. Trainer Derek Ryan mixes a bottle of Guinness with the horse feed everyday, because it "makes the feed taste better so the horses eat more and keep up their strength."
According to Meade, the trainer believes only Guinness will do. "The cheap stuff doesn't work. The cheap stuff will give 'em a hangover," the trainer chuckles. "There's a lot of yeast in it, which is very good for horses. A beer, a Guinness a day they say is very healthy for you and it keeps them on their appetite." Reportedly, Ryan learned this technique in Ireland where he grew up. Go figure.
