Officials are blaming Four Loko, an alcoholic energy drink fortified with caffeine, for a rash of 9 hospitalizations that followed a party near Central Washington University. 'Today' correspondent Kristen Welker chronicles the scare that was initially blamed on "spiked" drinks. "The students, mostly freshman women, started vomiting and in some cases passing out," Welker reports. "No drugs were found in the sickened students, but the police report indicates that there was heavy drinking at the underage party."
Police are placing special blame on Four Loko, because, according to Chief Steve Rittereiser, "Every one of them, that were hospitalized, had drank Four Loko." According to expert Dr. Mark Morocco, the danger of alcoholic energy drinks is "You might not be aware of how much alcohol you are ingesting." Four Loko's parent company claims that the drink is being unfairly singled-out, as the students were mixing many different alcoholic beverages at the party.
