My First Valentine: Real Women Share Theirs -- Do You Remember Yours?

When we were kids, Valentine's Day meant wearing something red to school, buying a Valentine's card for everyone, and fashioning a construction-paper-covered shoe box to collect them in. But do you remember the first card or gift that really made your heart go pitter-patter?

Maybe it was a single red rose. A cheesy mug that read, "You knock my socks off!" or a box of scary-waxy chocolate. Whatever it was, think back: Chances are, if you concentrate really hard, you'll remember both the gift and the giver. And wasn't that little thrill of being "liked" worth far more than whatever you'd gotten?

In a celebration of just that sort of puppy love, MyDaily asked a few of you about that fateful First Valentine. Read on to see what real women had to say about who left that first mark on their heart. Then, by all means, if you remember, share your story!

Reci, 26
"For our first Valentine's Day in 2000, my high school boyfriend used a variety of original prose (poems, one-liners, etc.) to decorate an entire 8"x11" page by hand with an inky pen, culminating in the center with a rose fashioned by lines of words. He gave it to me by our lockers that morning, accompanied by an actual rose and some chocolates, so I ended up walking around with it all day and showing it off (because my friends would ask what he got me -- and each and every one of them unfailingly said, "Awww..." upon seeing it). To this day, that poetry sheet was the most romantic and heartfelt gift anyone has ever given me -- and not only because it was my first real Valentine. While we were only together for about two years, and on and off for an additional four (until he met the girl who is now his wife), it was as pure and adorable as a high school love that blossomed in 9th grade can get."

"It was our first Valentine's Day. My boyfriend and I were both still in college and he surprised me with a night in the theater to see STOMP, a classic that I had been dying to see. I was studying theater and he was a biology major so it blew me away when he surprised me with an artsy present. We went back to his dorm room but when we got to his room, he said to wait outside. I waited for what felt like an hour, but I had a feeling something special was coming my way. He finally opened the door where I was greeted with candles, rose petals, and a three-tiered chocolate fountain with bowls of strawberries, pineapples, cake and marshmallows surrounding it! Theater and chocolate. He knows me all too well."

"Two years ago, I had my friends over to bake cookies and watch movies. My boyfriend at the time had a basketball game and couldn't make it. When my friends were at my house, he messaged me on AIM and asked if he could come over. I didn't think anything of it because I knew he had a game and wouldn't get back until late. While I was getting everything ready, my phone rang. I asked one of my friends to answer it for me. She ran downstairs to my basement to talk on the phone, then came back up with a big smile on her face. I asked her what happened, but she wouldn't tell me. About ten minutes later, my phone rang agin, and she picked up the phone and ran to the living room. She came back into the kitchen, grabbed me by the hand and pulled me into the living room. At the front door, I saw my boyfriend standing there with a rose and chocolates."

"We only went on a few dates so we weren't officially a couple and had already made plans with our respective single friends to spend Valentine's Day. It wasn't a big deal to me. It was the first time I was actually single during the holiday in four years so I celebrated my singledom by wearing an ankle-length floral granny nightgown to bed. So of course I was surprised -- and even more embarrassed -- when I woke up the next morning to a wake up call from him, that he made while sitting in a chair a few feet away from my bed. He had set everything up with my roommate the night before: She let him in earlier that morning to cook me a surprise breakfast. Ashamed of my nightgown, the first thing I said was, "Can you please go to the bathroom right now while I change?" I pulled the covers over me to shield him from the sight of my granny nightgown. He just laughed and obeyed while I quickly pulled on less comfortable but more suitable college-style pajamas. Then I watched as he fried up some sausages and scrambled eggs. He even made me heart-shaped pancakes (or at least tried). Since he wouldn't let me help him cook, I asked if I could repay him with a hug. This was our first real hug -- and a step up from the quick, awkward ones after our little dates. It was long and warm and safe, and for once I felt like I fit in those arms perfectly."

Jessica, 30
"The first Valentine's Day I celebrated with my husband -- then boyfriend -- was during a time when we were both strapped for cash. We had been going out for almost a year so we knew we wanted to do something fun but keep it low-cost at the same time. So we decided to make an extra-special night at home. We cooked with each other and got dressed up in very fancy clothes, and ate in his kitchen. We had two bottles of champagne, oysters and steamed fished with homemade fruit dipped in chocolate. We got tipsy, full, and took tons of pictures as we laughed and ate in the comfort of our own space. Best Valentine's Day Ever."

Samantha, 23
"He and I had gone on a few dates while we were both at Northwestern University, and I was hooked. As a film student, he watched movies all of the time. One of his then favorites was "The Rules of Attraction." In the film, one of the female characters sends her love interest a beautiful card with confetti inside. I thought it would be a great idea to replicate, so I made a handmade card. I also had a weekly radio show in college and, that year, my show landed on Valentine's Day. I had a great playlist lined up with love songs throughout the years. Then he called to tell me he had gotten my card and wondered why he'd get something today. In short, he FORGOT VALENTINE'S DAY! I immediately changed my playlist into an anti–Valentine's Day show and played songs like Maroon 5's "Through With You" and Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know." That day was easily the most embarrassing Valentine's Day ever. The next day, he surprised me with a box of chocolates, which I still suspect he got half off, but nevertheless it was heartfelt and sweet. So like any sap, I accepted them. Now we've been dating for over five years and we're more enamored than ever. However, if he forgets Valentine's Day again, I will find a radio station and give him some anti–Valentine's Day love."
