Going Gray in Your 20s: What Stress Has to Do With It

Going gray in your 20s: A new trend due to stress

While finding that first silver strand is just another natural part of the aging process, how would you feel if you found you were going gray in your 20s?

A new U.K. study found that about 32 percent of women under the age of 30 have already started going gray, an increase from the 18 percent of women who claimed the same thing 20 years ago. John Frieda, the hair-care line behind the study, found that two-thirds of the women said this was because of stress -- inspiring the company to dub these ladies "GHOSTS" -- or "Gray Haired Over Stressed Twenty Somethings."

Salons have been noticing the same thing and aren't as surprised by 20-somethings walking into their establishments with requests to cover up their grays. "In recent years, I've definitely noticed an increase in younger clients coming into the salon asking for color to cover their gray," Nicola Clarke, creative color director for John Frieda, told the U.K.'s Daily Mail. "It's not unusual for me to see a client aged 25 with gray hair, and frequently they do put it down to stress."

According to some scientists, stressed out people use up vitamin B, which has been linked to hair discoloration. Researchers in Japan have also linked a particular kind of stress called oxidative stress that can mess with hair follicles.

While the study found that stress was the factor for graying, some said that premature graying is linked to genetics, not stress. "Earlier onset of graying is usually genetically determined, with little in the way of environmental relevance," Nina Goad from the British Association of Dermatologists. "For the majority of people, graying hair is not down to something you've done, but to genetic factors beyond your control. Generally, lifestyle does not greatly impact on when your hair loses its color."

Although this is still up for debate, the idea of going gray earlier in life isn't something that many women would like to think about. Perhaps Lady Gaga made it look cool, but how many of us would really want to rock silver strands in our 20s?

Unless they're these celebs, busy going gray on purpose.
