If you're sitting around having the shoulda-woulda-couldas about an old fling, know you're not alone.

According to a new study, matters of love and romance top the list of reasons why women feel regret.

A phone survey by Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne of 370 adults found that 44 percent of female respondents had regrets about love. In contrast, only 19 percent of men did.

For the men, it turned out that work was the most common source of regret: It was the cause of their heartache 34 percent of the time, as compared to 27 percent for women.

Single people were more likely to have regrets of a romantic nature (surprise, surprise). People who had a regret about something they didn't do experienced regret longer than people who had regrets over something they did, so the next time you're standing on the precipice of a big choice about your love life, just do it -- at least if you regret it, you won't regret it as long.

The crippling mortification, however, is another story: We find that stuff can really stick around.
