Women Feel Judged Most by Other Women When They Wear a Bikini

Women in bikinis aren't so concerned about whether their crush thinks they look sexy or whether the guy sitting a few lounge chairs over is leering at them. They worry most about other women judging them.

In a telling swimsuit poll done by Fitness magazine, 80 percent of women said they think other women are scrutinizing them when they put on that two-piece, and 89 percent said other girls are their harshest critics on the beach or at the pool.

Forty-eight percent of the 1,000 women surveyed confessed they wouldn't even dare to don a bikini unless they lost at least 20 pounds.

The poll results, published in the magazine's June issue, "shed light on the complicated relationship women have with their bodies and how much time is spent worrying about what other women think," Fitness editor-in-chief Betty Wong said in a statement.

Fitness did the survey in the hopes of boosting women's confidence in themselves and making them realize that no one is without flaws.

"It is so important to make sure women are empowered to embrace their imperfections and celebrate their bodies -- no matter what shape or size," Wong said.

Beauty magazines showing picture-perfect models and celebrities in swimwear add to women's self-doubt, the poll found. Most surveyed said they wished they had the bodies of the stars they see, with 37 percent of them pining after Jennifer Aniston's figure and others wanting to look like the more voluptuous Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez.

A surprising 60 percent of respondents said they consider themselves less in shape than other women, and 53 percent said they feel jealous and insecure when they are around another woman with a killer figure.

Only 11 percent of those polled said they're confident "as is" wearing their bikini.

There's no such thing as a bikini body. I'm not famous so it's not my job to work out 7 hours a day to maintain a level of body hotness to sell whatever it is I want you to buy. I like my body. It's mine and I think it's cute. Wear whatever you want ladies, there's at least one woman in your corner.

It's a shame women spend so much of their lives equating themselves physically...

In my opinion, women are definitely capable of being catty and vicious, but one just needs to be confident and strong enough to overcome that. Ultimately, a women should buy and wear a swimsuit that best suits their body type, whether that be a bikini or not. Wearing something that one doesn't feel 100% confident in may make one feel vunerable and insecure about the way they look and become paranoid that other women are "judging them". Regardless, the best thing a women can do to overcome this is to buy and wear something that they feel most comforable and attractive in and just rock it. When one feels confident, nothing can bring them down.

I don't give a second thought about what another woman or man thinks of me in my 2 piece. If you don't like it don't look. I liked it, I purchased it and I am going to wear it. And who said you looked so damn great anyway??????

What's the message of this article? That people should feel perfectly fine and acceptable when they are too fat just because everyone else around them is also too fat? The notion that slim and fit people are somehow the "not real" example of humanity is alarming. If other people think that you're too fat to look good in swimwear, then it's likely not because of their perceptions, but because you ARE too fat and out of shape.

While I agree that some women dress too skimmpy, It takes a lot of effort to stay slim and I admire them for that effort. Some women (and men) eat too many hotdogs and watch too much Oprah, then resent the attention that the slim gals get.

I think women judge other women because of men. Just a thought. I have seen men with women from every walk of life...no matter how pretty, check out other women. If we felt we had your full attention we might not feel the need to tear down every woman we see. Just my personal opinion.
