2 Minute Memo

Lindsay Lohan is a free woman. The actress was released Wednesday morning -- her electronic ankle bracelet removed -- after serving 35 days under house arrest at her Los Angeles apartment in connection with the theft of a $2,500 necklace from an L.A. boutique, Reuters reports. Though she was sentenced to 120 days in jail, after pleading no-contest to the crime, she was allowed to serve a shorter sentence at home due to overcrowding in the Los Angeles jail system.

The Las Conchas wildfire in New Mexico has grown to more than 61,000 acres and continues to threaten the Los Alamos nuclear lab in which the first atomic bomb was developed, prompting the Environmental Protection Agency to bring in air monitors and other equipment to check for a spike in radiation levels. So far nothing unusual has been reported. But while lab officials insist the nuclear material stored at the site is "protected and safe," some officials are not so sure. "It contains approximately 20,000 barrels of nuclear waste," former top security official Glen Walp told ABC News. "It's not contained within a concrete, brick and mortar-type building, but rather in a sort of fabric-type building that a fire could easily consume. Potential is high for a major calamity if the fire would reach these areas." The flames have come within 50 feet of the lab's grounds, ABC News reports, but so far firefighters have been able to stave it off.

"This is the first that I've seen much of that. It kind of takes you back. It makes you want to reach out to some of these folks and say, 'What's your problem?' And what was the problem? And what is the problem? What would make a celebrity, like you saw on screen, so hate someone that they'd seek their destruction, their death, the death of their children? What would make someone be so full of hate and, I guess, a sense of being threatened that they would want to see that person destroyed?"

An attack on a hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan, Tuesday night by Taliban suicide bombers and armed gunmen has left at least nine civilians dead and at least a dozen more injured. Among those killed were both hotel staff members and visitors to the Intercontinental Hotel, but there have been conflicting reports about the exact number of victims as well as their nationalities. The attack, in which gunman roamed the hotel randomly shooting victims, stretched for hours until the last of the gunmen were killed by NATO helicopters just before dawn on Wednesday. The rampage was believed to have been an attempt by the Taliban to undermine the transition to Afghan rule in Kabul as U.S. and NATO forces begin to withdraw, the Washington Post reports.

In an intriguing new study, researchers have found that BPA -- aka the hormone-changing compound bisphenol-A, a chemical found in some common plastics -- may make men (or at least male mice) less masculine and less attractive to women. Researchers at the University of Missouri found that male mice exposed to BPA in the womb were less likely to attract female mice -- and more likely to behave like females themselves. Female mice that were exposed to the chemical in utero appeared to be unaffected by the exposure, however. "BPA has been shown to suppress the early production of testosterone. In short, the females can sense [the males'] compromised state and are less attracted to these males," study co-author Cheryl Rosenfeld told ABC News.
Firefighters are working to contain a 44,000-acre wildfire raging through the mountains in northern New Mexico, trying to keep it from reaching Los Alamos, a town famous for housing the government laboratory that produced the first atomic bomb. According to NPR, most Los Alamos residents have been evacuated from the town, an estimated 13,000 people; those who have opted to stay are currently being monitored by police and the National Guard. The threat of fire has prompted the Los Alamos National Laboratory's closure, but officials say that radioactive materials stored there are in fireproof containers and do not pose a threat even if the flames do reach the lab.

No sooner has she entered the race for the GOP presidential nomination than Rep. Michele Bachmann has found herself playing down a few minor scandals. First, she's ready to forgive Fox News anchor Chris Wallace for asking her if she's a "flake," which she rightly noted was "insulting," after he called Monday night to say he was sorry. "He did apologize and I am happy to accept his apology, and we are moving on," Bachmann told Wallace's Fox News colleague Sean Hannity. "I am a serious person and a serious candidate for the presidency of the United States." And then she was trying to brush off an embarrassing gaffe in which she said screen icon John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa, where she announced her candidacy Monday. Wayne actually lived elsewhere in Iowa. Notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy was from Waterloo, the Los Angeles Times reports. Oops.
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords made a brief return to the spotlight Monday, appearing before a crowd of hundreds at an awards ceremony in Houston at which her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, received a Spaceflight Medal honoring his safe space shuttle return. As she entered in a wheelchair smiling and waving, she got a standing ovation from the crowd, ABC News reports. She and Kelly held hands for most of the event, and when he received his award, she rose to give him a hug and a kiss.
